You’ve been lied to. You’ve been told happiness happens “when” you do or have something out there. Some goal. Some thing.
You’ve been led to believe by the world’s greatest marketers, you’ll be happy “when” something else happens. So you set goals to go after something out there. Things like…
-A certain income per month,
-A new house,
-A dream trip with the family,
-A number on the scale, or size on a clothing tag.
But here’s the truth…
Whatever it is you think will make you happy “when” is backwards thinking. There’s a better, more powerful way to move through life.
I think of it like a cheat code for life. A hack you can use to get to your ideal results faster. This cheat code has been mentioned in the pages of every single biography I’ve ever read of great men and women.
In other words, happiness is NOT an effect. It’s a cause.
Unfortunately, most people get this completely backwards. They expect some thing or event out there to make them happy, fulfilled, proud, etc…
I call this the “I’ll Be Happy When… Syndrome”
It’s a syndrome that affects most of the planet. It’s the human condition. But it doesn’t have to be your condition. You do not have to put your happiness on hold until something external happens.
Fortunately, there’s a cure for this syndrome…
4 SHIFTS FOR MOVING FROM “WHEN” THINKING TO “WHILE” THINKING
You do not get what you deserve in life, you get what you mentally rehearse. If you rehearse in your mind that you’ll only be happy WHEN you get X, then it’s virtually impossible to be happy today.
However, if you mentally rehearse and practice happiness, gratitude, and fulfillment today, you’ll find you get those external rewards much faster. And, you’ll enjoy life WHILE you move towards what you want. Not later.
Now I realize this can all sound a little fluffy. I used to think the mindset and emotion stuff was overrated. I just wanted the strategy. Something practical I could apply today.
However, the biggest breakthroughs in my life came after I shifted my thinking from WHEN to WHILE. The more I mentally rehearse these shifts in thinking, the faster I seem to get results.
Here are the 4 mental shifts that have made the biggest difference for me…
SHIFT #1 — WHO AM I BECOMING?
To get where you want to go, you are going to have to become a different person.
For me that means falling in love with the person I need to be WHILE I am becoming that person — not after. I do that by constantly asking and FEELING the answers to these key questions:
How am I showing up today?
Am I showing up TODAY like the person I say I want to be in the future? Do I make decisions the way that person would? Are my principles, my standards, my actions, inline with that person I want to become?
If not, then I have very little shot of becoming that person. As the saying goes, practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.
Am I moving through life happy?
This is a great question to bring me back to the present. Do I notice myself being happy most of the day? If not, why not? What am I focusing on that is making me unhappy?
Checking in with these questions several times a day can keep you on track. They’ll allow you to be happy WHILE you are on the journey instead of waiting until WHEN.
SHIFT #2 — WHAT SKILLS AM I BUILDING?
If you’re moving towards your goals then you are building skills. The skills you are building today are like stocking a pantry full of ingredients you can use to cook up anything you want in the future.
Appreciate that. Acknowledge that. Choose to be grateful and happy about those skills, even if they aren’t fully developed — yet.
SHIFT #3 — FOCUS ON PEOPLE
When we get too focused on ourselves, it’s easy to get off track. I’ve found I’ll usually do more for others than I will for myself.
If I don’t feel like going to work one day, I remember my team is counting on me. My family is counting on me. My clients are counting on me. THEIR clients who don’t even know I exist are counting on me.
By shifting my focus from what’s in it for me to other people, I get a jolt of energy and fulfillment WHILE I move through my day.
SHIFT #4 — FOCUS ON PROGRESS
As an entrepreneurial minded person, it’s easy to always be looking ahead at the next goal. The next accomplishment. And that’s great. It keeps you moving forward.
However, it can also cause you to miss, or discount, how far you’ve already come.
When you don’t take the time to notice your progress, it’s easy to get frustrated. And frustration kills momentum.
That’s why we teach our clients to capture all their wins, all their progress, no matter how small it may seem. We literally ask them to write down the progress they are making in a journal.
Why? Because on the tough days, and there are always tough days, there’s a record of just how far you’ve come.
By acknowledging and being grateful for how far you’ve come, you get to enjoy life WHILE you move towards your goals.
One rule on this shift… NO “yeah buts…” allowed. For example, it’s not…
“I just created a new webinar BUT I haven’t enrolled a new client.”
“I completed my webinar.”
Period. That’s what it means to focus on progress without a “yeah but” WHILE going through life.
